Description
The aim of the project "The many futures of gender. An oral history of feminist theory" is to tell and reflect the different histories of feminist theory since the 1970s. To this end, conversations with protagonists are carried out who have or had a formative influence on feminist theory. In engaging with these feminist scholars, we wish to delve deeper not only into the ideas and concepts that form the key basis of substantive feminist theories but also to explore the historical contexts, the collective thinking, political practices and historical controversies that enabled them at the time. We bring forth exigent questions such as those of power, inequality and violence, intersectionality, the relation of sex, gender and sexuality, or the critique of binary thinking. The project will also show the contributions of feminism into analyzing and challenging powerful differences other than gender – such as race, class, nationality, religion, and coloniality. It further aims at situating gendered power in capitalist and neoliberal regimes. We further address possible shortcomings of feminist theories, questions that still need to be asked, knowledges have not been taken into account and collaborations that wait to be set up. The project is rooted in oral history and philosophical exchange. It has value for those of us interested in the history of feminist theory since the 1970s and in feminism as a resourceful way of grappling with the inequalities in the present state of the world.
The findings that are obtained in the research project will be presented on a multilingual website.
