On Thursday 19 May 2022, the University of Bern's Faculty of Humanities 2020 honorary doctorate recipient, Prof. Dr. Anne Fausto-Sterling was in Bern to give a public lecture titled:
Feminist approaches to science and medicine: what are they and why do they matter?
Organized on behalf of the Faculty of Humanities, this event was a chance for the Dean Professor Gabriele Rippl to hand over to Professor Fausto-Sterling her diploma. These diplomas are normally presented during the university's Dies Academicus celebrations but, due to the pandemic, this was not possible in 2020.
Anne Fausto-Sterling is the Nancy Duke Lewis Professor Emerita of Biology and Gender Studies in the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology and Biochemistry at Brown University, USA. She is also the founder and former director of the Science & Technology Studies Program at Brown. Her ground-breaking books include Sexing the Body: Gender Politics and the Construction of Sexuality (2000) and Sex/Gender: Biology in a Social World (2012).
